Morning Prayer

Lent
Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil. Joel 2:13

Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Psalm 61

Genesis Chapter 42

⁽¹⁾ When Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, 'Why do you look at one another?' ⁽²⁾ And he said, 'Indeed I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down to that place and buy for us there, that we may live and not die.' ⁽³⁾ So Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. ⁽⁴⁾ But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, 'Lest some calamity befall him.'

⁽⁹⁾ Then Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed about them, and said to them, 'You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land!' ⁽¹⁰⁾ And they said to him, 'No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. ⁽¹¹⁾ We are all one man's sons; we are honest men; your servants are not spies.' ⁽¹²⁾ But he said to them, 'No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land.'

⁽¹³⁾ And they said, 'Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and in fact, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no more.' ⁽¹⁴⁾ But Joseph said to them, 'It is as I spoke to you, saying, 'You are spies!' ⁽¹⁵⁾ In this manner you shall be tested: By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here. ⁽¹⁶⁾ Send one of you, and let him bring your brother; and you shall be kept in prison, that your words may be tested to see whether there is any truth in you; or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies!'

1 Corinthians Chapter 5

⁽¹⁾ It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles -- that a man has his father's wife! ⁽²⁾ And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you. ⁽³⁾ For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed. ⁽⁴⁾ In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

⁽⁵⁾ deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. ⁽⁶⁾ Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? ⁽⁷⁾ Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. ⁽⁸⁾ Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Mark Chapter 3

⁽¹⁹⁾ and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. And they went into a house. ⁽²⁰⁾ Then the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. ⁽²¹⁾ But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, 'He is out of His mind.' ⁽²²⁾ And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, 'He has Beelzebub,' and, 'By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.'

⁽²³⁾ So He called them to Himself and said to them in parables: 'How can Satan cast out Satan? ⁽²⁴⁾ If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. ⁽²⁵⁾ And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. ⁽²⁶⁾ And if Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he cannot stand, but has an end.

⁽²⁷⁾ No one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house. ⁽²⁸⁾ Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; ⁽²⁹⁾ but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation' -- ⁽³⁰⁾ because they said, 'He has an unclean spirit.'

⁽³¹⁾ Then His brothers and His mother came, and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him. ⁽³²⁾ And a multitude was sitting around Him; and they said to Him, 'Look, Your mother and Your brothers are outside seeking You.' ⁽³³⁾ But He answered them, saying, 'Who is My mother, or My brothers?' ⁽³⁴⁾ And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, 'Here are My mother and My brothers!

Splendor and honor and kingly power
are yours by right, O Lord our God,

The Song of Zechariah Luke 1: 68 to 79

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day: O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord.
