Morning Prayer

Lent
Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil. Joel 2:13

Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Psalm 24

⁽¹⁾ The earth is the LORD's, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein. ⁽²⁾ For He has founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the waters. ⁽³⁾ Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy place? ⁽⁴⁾ He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully.

Psalm 29

Genesis Chapter 41

⁽¹⁴⁾ Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh. ⁽¹⁵⁾ And Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that you can understand a dream, to interpret it.' ⁽¹⁶⁾ So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, 'It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.' ⁽¹⁷⁾ Then Pharaoh said to Joseph: 'Behold, in my dream I stood on the bank of the river.

⁽¹⁸⁾ Suddenly seven cows came up out of the river, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow. ⁽¹⁹⁾ Then behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and gaunt, such ugliness as I have never seen in all the land of Egypt. ⁽²⁰⁾ And the gaunt and ugly cows ate up the first seven, the fat cows. ⁽²¹⁾ When they had eaten them up, no one would have known that they had eaten them, for they were just as ugly as at the beginning. So I awoke.

⁽²²⁾ Also I saw in my dream, and suddenly seven heads came up on one stalk, full and good. ⁽²³⁾ Then behold, seven heads, withered, thin, and blighted by the east wind, sprang up after them. ⁽²⁴⁾ And the thin heads devoured the seven good heads. So I told this to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me.' ⁽²⁵⁾ Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, 'The dreams of Pharaoh are one; God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do:

⁽²⁶⁾ The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads are seven years; the dreams are one. ⁽²⁷⁾ And the seven thin and ugly cows which came up after them are seven years, and the seven empty heads blighted by the east wind are seven years of famine. ⁽²⁸⁾ This is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do. ⁽²⁹⁾ Indeed seven years of great plenty will come throughout all the land of Egypt;

⁽³⁰⁾ but after them seven years of famine will arise, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine will deplete the land. ⁽³¹⁾ So the plenty will not be known in the land because of the famine following, for it will be very severe. ⁽³²⁾ And the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. ⁽³³⁾ Now therefore, let Pharaoh select a discerning and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt.

⁽³⁴⁾ Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years. ⁽³⁵⁾ And let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and store up grain under the authority of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. ⁽³⁶⁾ Then that food shall be as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land may not perish during the famine.' ⁽³⁷⁾ So the advice was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants.

⁽³⁸⁾ And Pharaoh said to his servants, 'Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?' ⁽³⁹⁾ Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. ⁽⁴⁰⁾ You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you.' ⁽⁴¹⁾ And Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.'

⁽⁴²⁾ Then Pharaoh took his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph's hand; and he clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck. ⁽⁴³⁾ And he had him ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried out before him, 'Bow the knee!' So he set him over all the land of Egypt. ⁽⁴⁴⁾ Pharaoh also said to Joseph, 'I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no man may lift his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.' ⁽⁴⁵⁾ And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnath-Paaneah. And he gave him as a wife Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On. So Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.

Romans Chapter 6

⁽³⁾ Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? ⁽⁴⁾ Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. ⁽⁵⁾ For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, ⁽⁶⁾ knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

⁽⁷⁾ For he who has died has been freed from sin. ⁽⁸⁾ Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, ⁽⁹⁾ knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. ⁽¹⁰⁾ For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

John Chapter 5

⁽¹⁹⁾ Then Jesus answered and said to them, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. ⁽²⁰⁾ For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. ⁽²¹⁾ For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. ⁽²²⁾ For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,

⁽²³⁾ that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. ⁽²⁴⁾ Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

The Song of Zechariah Luke 1: 68 to 79
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham,
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

O Lord and Ruler of the hosts of heaven,
God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
and of all their righteous offspring:
You made the heavens and the earth,
with all their vast array.
All things quake with fear at your presence;
they tremble because of your power.
But your merciful promise is beyond all measure;
it surpasses all that our minds can fathom.
O Lord, you are full of compassion,
long-suffering, and abounding in mercy.
You hold back your hand;

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, forever and ever.
