Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Venite

Psalm 95:1 to 7
Come, let us sing to the Lord;
   let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving
   and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,
   and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth,
   and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
   and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee,
   and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
    Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

The Lessons

Psalm 119

⁽¹⁾ Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the LORD!⁽²⁾ Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart!⁽³⁾ They also do no iniquity; They walk in His ways.⁽⁴⁾ You have commanded us To keep Your precepts diligently.

⁽⁵⁾ Oh, that my ways were directed To keep Your statutes!⁽⁶⁾ Then I would not be ashamed, When I look into all Your commandments.⁽⁷⁾ I will praise You with uprightness of heart, When I learn Your righteous judgments.⁽⁸⁾ I will keep Your statutes; Oh, do not forsake me utterly!

⁽⁹⁾ How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.⁽¹⁰⁾ With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!⁽¹¹⁾ Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!⁽¹²⁾ Blessed are You, O LORD! Teach me Your statutes!

1 Samuel Chapter 16

⁽¹⁾ Now the LORD said to Samuel, 'How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.'⁽²⁾ And Samuel said, 'How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.' And the LORD said, 'Take a heifer with you, and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.'⁽³⁾ Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.'⁽⁴⁾ So Samuel did what the LORD said, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, 'Do you come peaceably?'

⁽⁵⁾ And he said, 'Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.' Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.⁽⁶⁾ So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, 'Surely the LORD's anointed is before Him.'⁽⁷⁾ But the LORD said to Samuel, 'Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'⁽⁸⁾ So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, 'Neither has the LORD chosen this one.'

⁽⁹⁾ Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, 'Neither has the LORD chosen this one.'⁽¹⁰⁾ Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, 'The LORD has not chosen these.'⁽¹¹⁾ And Samuel said to Jesse, 'Are all the young men here?' Then he said, 'There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.' And Samuel said to Jesse, 'Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.'⁽¹²⁾ So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the LORD said, 'Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!'

⁽¹³⁾ Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

Acts Chapter 10

⁽¹⁾ There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment,⁽²⁾ a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always.⁽³⁾ About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, 'Cornelius!'⁽⁴⁾ And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, 'What is it, lord?' So he said to him, 'Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.

⁽⁵⁾ Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter.⁽⁶⁾ He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.'⁽⁷⁾ And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually.⁽⁸⁾ So when he had explained all these things to them, he sent them to Joppa.

⁽⁹⁾ The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour.⁽¹⁰⁾ Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance⁽¹¹⁾ and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth.⁽¹²⁾ In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air.

⁽¹³⁾ And a voice came to him, 'Rise, Peter; kill and eat.'⁽¹⁴⁾ But Peter said, 'Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.'⁽¹⁵⁾ And a voice spoke to him again the second time, 'What God has cleansed you must not call common.'⁽¹⁶⁾ This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again.

Luke Chapter 24

⁽¹³⁾ Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem.⁽¹⁴⁾ And they talked together of all these things which had happened.⁽¹⁵⁾ So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them.⁽¹⁶⁾ But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.

⁽¹⁷⁾ And He said to them, 'What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?'⁽¹⁸⁾ Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, 'Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?'⁽¹⁹⁾ And He said to them, 'What things?' So they said to Him, 'The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,⁽²⁰⁾ and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him.

⁽²¹⁾ But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.⁽²²⁾ Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us.⁽²³⁾ When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.⁽²⁴⁾ And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.'

⁽²⁵⁾ Then He said to them, 'O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!⁽²⁶⁾ Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?'⁽²⁷⁾ And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.⁽²⁸⁾ Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther.

⁽²⁹⁾ But they constrained Him, saying, 'Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.' And He went in to stay with them.⁽³⁰⁾ Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.⁽³¹⁾ Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.⁽³²⁾ And they said to one another, 'Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?'

⁽³³⁾ So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together,⁽³⁴⁾ saying, 'The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!'⁽³⁵⁾ And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.

Glory to God in the highest,

Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

have mercy on us;

receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving you and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory, and, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages.
