Confession of Sin

Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

The Invitatory and Psalter
Lord, open our lips. And our mouth shall proclaim your praise
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen   Alleluia

Venite
ⓘ   'Venite' is Latin for 'O Come,' the opening word of Psalm 95: Venite exultemus Domino ('O Come, let us sing to the LORD').
Psalm 95:1 to 7
Come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth,
and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee,
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

The Antiphon:
ⓘ   A short, reflective sentence recited alongside a psalm to deepen our understanding of the readings.
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: Come let us adore him.

The Lessons

Psalm 101

(1) I will sing of mercy and justice; To You, O LORD, I will sing praises. (2) I will behave wisely in a perfect way. Oh, when will You come to me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. (3) I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me. (4) A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will not know wickedness.

(5) Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, Him I will destroy; The one who has a haughty look and a proud heart, Him I will not endure. (6) My eyes shall be on the faithful of the land, That they may dwell with me; He who walks in a perfect way, He shall serve me. (7) He who works deceit shall not dwell within my house; He who tells lies shall not continue in my presence. (8) Early I will destroy all the wicked of the land, That I may cut off all the evildoers from the city of the LORD.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Psalm 109

(1) Do not keep silent, O God of my praise! (2) For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful Have opened against me; They have spoken against me with a lying tongue. (3) They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, And fought against me without a cause. (4) In return for my love they are my accusers, But I give myself to prayer.

(5) Thus they have rewarded me evil for good, And hatred for my love. (6) Set a wicked man over him, And let an accuser stand at his right hand. (7) When he is judged, let him be found guilty, And let his prayer become sin. (8) Let his days be few, And let another take his office.

(9) Let his children be fatherless, And his wife a widow. (10) Let his children continually be vagabonds, and beg; Let them seek their bread also from their desolate places. (11) Let the creditor seize all that he has, And let strangers plunder his labor. (12) Let there be none to extend mercy to him, Nor let there be any to favor his fatherless children.

(13) Let his posterity be cut off, And in the generation following let their name be blotted out. (14) Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, And let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. (15) Let them be continually before the LORD, That He may cut off the memory of them from the earth; (16) Because he did not remember to show mercy, But persecuted the poor and needy man, That he might even slay the broken in heart.

(17) As he loved cursing, so let it come to him; As he did not delight in blessing, so let it be far from him. (18) As he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, So let it enter his body like water, And like oil into his bones. (19) Let it be to him like the garment which covers him, And for a belt with which he girds himself continually. (20) Let this be the LORD's reward to my accusers, And to those who speak evil against my person.

(21) But You, O GOD the Lord, Deal with me for Your name's sake; Because Your mercy is good, deliver me. (22) For I am poor and needy, And my heart is wounded within me. (23) I am gone like a shadow when it lengthens; I am shaken off like a locust. (24) My knees are weak through fasting, And my flesh is feeble from lack of fatness.

(25) I also have become a reproach to them; When they look at me, they shake their heads. (26) Help me, O LORD my God! Oh, save me according to Your mercy, (27) That they may know that this is Your hand -- That You, LORD, have done it! (28) Let them curse, but You bless; When they arise, let them be ashamed, But let Your servant rejoice.

(29) Let my accusers be clothed with shame, And let them cover themselves with their own disgrace as with a mantle. (30) I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; Yes, I will praise Him among the multitude.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

1 Samuel Chapter 7

(2) So it was that the ark remained in Kirjath Jearim a long time; it was there twenty years. And all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD. (3) Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, 'If you return to the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, and prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.' (4) So the children of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and served the LORD only. (5) And Samuel said, 'Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the LORD for you.'

(6) So they gathered together at Mizpah, drew water, and poured it out before the LORD. And they fasted that day, and said there, 'We have sinned against the LORD.' And Samuel judged the children of Israel at Mizpah. (7) Now when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. (8) So the children of Israel said to Samuel, 'Do not cease to cry out to the LORD our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.' (9) And Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. Then Samuel cried out to the LORD for Israel, and the LORD answered him.

(10) Now as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel. But the LORD thundered with a loud thunder upon the Philistines that day, and so confused them that they were overcome before Israel. (11) And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and drove them back as far as below Beth Car. (12) Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, 'Thus far the LORD has helped us.' (13) So the Philistines were subdued, and they did not come anymore into the territory of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

(14) Then the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath; and Israel recovered its territory from the hands of the Philistines. Also there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. (15) And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. (16) He went from year to year on a circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all those places. (17) But he always returned to Ramah, for his home was there. There he judged Israel, and there he built an altar to the LORD.

Acts Chapter 6

(1) Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. (2) Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, 'It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. (3) Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; (4) but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.'

(5) And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, (6) whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. (7) Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. (8) And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people.

(9) Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen. (10) And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. (11) Then they secretly induced men to say, 'We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.' (12) And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council.

(13) They also set up false witnesses who said, 'This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; (14) for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.' (15) And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.

Luke Chapter 22

(14) When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. (15) Then He said to them, 'With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; (16) for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.' (17) Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, 'Take this and divide it among yourselves;

(18) for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.' (19) And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.' (20) Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. (21) But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table.

(22) And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!' (23) Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.

The Prayers

The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
  hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
  And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
  but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
  forever and ever. Amen.

Closing Prayers

Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory, and, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
