Grace to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Phillipians 1:2

Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

The Lessons

Psalm 78

⁽¹⁾ Give ear, O my people, to my law; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth. ⁽²⁾ I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, ⁽³⁾ Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us. ⁽⁴⁾ We will not hide them from their children, Telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.

⁽⁵⁾ For He established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers, That they should make them known to their children; ⁽⁶⁾ That the generation to come might know them, The children who would be born, That they may arise and declare them to their children, ⁽⁷⁾ That they may set their hope in God, And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments; ⁽⁸⁾ And may not be like their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that did not set its heart aright, And whose spirit was not faithful to God.

⁽⁹⁾ The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, Turned back in the day of battle. ⁽¹⁰⁾ They did not keep the covenant of God; They refused to walk in His law, ⁽¹¹⁾ And forgot His works And His wonders that He had shown them. ⁽¹²⁾ Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers, In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

⁽¹³⁾ He divided the sea and caused them to pass through; And He made the waters stand up like a heap. ⁽¹⁴⁾ In the daytime also He led them with the cloud, And all the night with a light of fire. ⁽¹⁵⁾ He split the rocks in the wilderness, And gave them drink in abundance like the depths. ⁽¹⁶⁾ He also brought streams out of the rock, And caused waters to run down like rivers.

⁽¹⁷⁾ But they sinned even more against Him By rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness. ⁽¹⁸⁾ And they tested God in their heart By asking for the food of their fancy. ⁽¹⁹⁾ Yes, they spoke against God: They said, 'Can God prepare a table in the wilderness? ⁽²⁰⁾ Behold, He struck the rock, So that the waters gushed out, And the streams overflowed. Can He give bread also? Can He provide meat for His people?'

⁽²¹⁾ Therefore the LORD heard this and was furious; So a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also came up against Israel, ⁽²²⁾ Because they did not believe in God, And did not trust in His salvation. ⁽²³⁾ Yet He had commanded the clouds above, And opened the doors of heaven, ⁽²⁴⁾ Had rained down manna on them to eat, And given them of the bread of heaven.

⁽²⁵⁾ Men ate angels' food; He sent them food to the full. ⁽²⁶⁾ He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens; And by His power He brought in the south wind. ⁽²⁷⁾ He also rained meat on them like the dust, Feathered fowl like the sand of the seas; ⁽²⁸⁾ And He let them fall in the midst of their camp, All around their dwellings.

⁽²⁹⁾ So they ate and were well filled, For He gave them their own desire. ⁽³⁰⁾ They were not deprived of their craving; But while their food was still in their mouths, ⁽³¹⁾ The wrath of God came against them, And slew the stoutest of them, And struck down the choice men of Israel. ⁽³²⁾ In spite of this they still sinned, AND did not believe in His wondrous works.

⁽³³⁾ Therefore their days He consumed in futility, And their years in fear. ⁽³⁴⁾ When He slew them, then they sought Him; And they returned and sought earnestly for God. ⁽³⁵⁾ Then they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer. ⁽³⁶⁾ Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouth, And they lied to Him with their tongue;

⁽³⁷⁾ For their heart was not steadfast with Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant. ⁽³⁸⁾ But He, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, And did not destroy them. Yes, many a time He turned His anger away, And did not stir up all His wrath; ⁽³⁹⁾ For He remembered that they were but flesh, A breath that passes away and does not come again.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

1 Samuel Chapter 1

⁽²¹⁾ Now the man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and his vow. ⁽²²⁾ But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, 'Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the LORD and remain there forever.' ⁽²³⁾ And Elkanah her husband said to her, 'Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only let the LORD establish His word.' So the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him. ⁽²⁴⁾ Now when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD in Shiloh. And the child was young.

⁽²⁵⁾ Then they slaughtered a bull, and brought the child to Eli. ⁽²⁶⁾ And she said, 'O my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD. ⁽²⁷⁾ For this child I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. ⁽²⁸⁾ Therefore I also have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the LORD.' So they worshiped the LORD there.

⁽¹⁾ And Hannah prayed and said: 'My heart rejoices in the LORD; My horn is exalted in the LORD. I smile at my enemies, Because I rejoice in Your salvation. ⁽²⁾ No one is holy like the LORD, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God. ⁽³⁾ Talk no more so very proudly; Let no arrogance come from your mouth, For the LORD is the God of knowledge; And by Him actions are weighed. ⁽⁴⁾ The bows of the mighty men are broken, And those who stumbled are girded with strength.

⁽⁵⁾ Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, And the hungry have ceased to hunger. Even the barren has borne seven, And she who has many children has become feeble. ⁽⁶⁾ The LORD kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up. ⁽⁷⁾ The LORD makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up. ⁽⁸⁾ He raises the poor from the dust And lifts the beggar from the ash heap, To set them among princes And make them inherit the throne of glory. 'For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, And He has set the world upon them.

⁽⁹⁾ He will guard the feet of His saints, But the wicked shall be silent in darkness. 'For by strength no man shall prevail. ⁽¹⁰⁾ The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken in pieces; From heaven He will thunder against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth. 'He will give strength to His king, And exalt the horn of His anointed.' ⁽¹¹⁾ Then Elkanah went to his house at Ramah. But the child ministered to the LORD before Eli the priest.

Acts Chapter 1

⁽¹⁵⁾ And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, ⁽¹⁶⁾ Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; ⁽¹⁷⁾ for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.' ⁽¹⁸⁾ (Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out.

⁽¹⁹⁾ And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) ⁽²⁰⁾ For it is written in the book of Psalms: 'Let his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one live in it'; and, 'Let another take his office.' ⁽²¹⁾ Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, ⁽²²⁾ beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.'

⁽²³⁾ And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. ⁽²⁴⁾ And they prayed and said, 'You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen ⁽²⁵⁾ to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.' ⁽²⁶⁾ And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Luke Chapter 20

⁽¹⁹⁾ And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people -- for they knew He had spoken this parable against them. ⁽²⁰⁾ So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor. ⁽²¹⁾ Then they asked Him, saying, 'Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth: ⁽²²⁾ Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'

⁽²³⁾ But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, 'Why do you test Me? ⁽²⁴⁾ Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?' They answered and said, 'Caesar's.' ⁽²⁵⁾ And He said to them, 'Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.' ⁽²⁶⁾ But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.
  On the third day he rose again.
