Morning Prayer

Lent
Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil. Joel 2:13

Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Psalm 71

⁽¹⁾ In You, O LORD, I put my trust; Let me never be put to shame. ⁽²⁾ Deliver me in Your righteousness, and cause me to escape; Incline Your ear to me, and save me. ⁽³⁾ Be my strong refuge, To which I may resort continually; You have given the commandment to save me, For You are my rock and my fortress. ⁽⁴⁾ Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, Out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.

Jeremiah Chapter 4

⁽⁹⁾ And it shall come to pass in that day,' says the LORD, 'That the heart of the king shall perish, And the heart of the princes; The priests shall be astonished, And the prophets shall wonder.' ⁽¹⁰⁾ Then I said, 'Ah, Lord GOD! Surely You have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, Saying, 'You shall have peace,' Whereas the sword reaches to the heart.' ⁽¹⁹⁾ O my soul, my soul! I am pained in my very heart! My heart makes a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, Because you have heard, O my soul, The sound of the trumpet, The alarm of war. ⁽²⁰⁾ Destruction upon destruction is cried, For the whole land is plundered. Romans Chapter 2

⁽¹²⁾ For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law ⁽¹³⁾ (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; ⁽¹⁴⁾ for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, ⁽¹⁵⁾ who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them)

You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? ⁽²³⁾ You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law?

John Chapter 5

⁽¹⁹⁾ Then Jesus answered and said to them, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. ⁽²⁰⁾ For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. ⁽²¹⁾ For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. ⁽²²⁾ For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,

He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. ⁽²⁴⁾ Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. ⁽²⁵⁾ Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. ⁽²⁶⁾ For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,

⁽²⁷⁾ and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. ⁽²⁸⁾ Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice ⁽²⁹⁾ and come forth -- those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.
  On the third day he rose again.
  He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Seasonal Collect:  Second Sunday in Lent
O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day: Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
