Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Venite

ⓘ 'Venite' is Latin for 'O Come,' the opening word of Psalm 95: Venite exultemus Domino ('O Come, let us sing to the LORD').

Psalm 95:1 to 7
Come, let us sing to the Lord;
   let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving
   and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,
   and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth,
   and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
   and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee,
   and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
    Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

The Lessons

Psalm 119

⁽¹⁾ Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the LORD!⁽²⁾ Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart!⁽³⁾ They also do no iniquity; They walk in His ways.⁽⁴⁾ You have commanded us To keep Your precepts diligently.

⁽⁵⁾ Oh, that my ways were directed To keep Your statutes!⁽⁶⁾ Then I would not be ashamed, When I look into all Your commandments.⁽⁷⁾ I will praise You with uprightness of heart, When I learn Your righteous judgments.⁽⁸⁾ I will keep Your statutes; Oh, do not forsake me utterly!

⁽⁹⁾ How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.⁽¹⁰⁾ With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!⁽¹¹⁾ Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!⁽¹²⁾ Blessed are You, O LORD! Teach me Your statutes!

Job Chapter 6

⁽¹⁾ Then Job answered and said:⁽¹⁾ Is there not a time of hard service for man on earth? Are not his days also like the days of a hired man?⁽²⁾ Like a servant who earnestly desires the shade, And like a hired man who eagerly looks for his wages,⁽³⁾ So I have been allotted months of futility, And wearisome nights have been appointed to me.⁽⁴⁾ When I lie down, I say, 'When shall I arise, And the night be ended?' For I have had my fill of tossing till dawn.

⁽⁵⁾ My flesh is caked with worms and dust, My skin is cracked and breaks out afresh.⁽⁶⁾ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, And are spent without hope.⁽⁷⁾ Oh, remember that my life is a breath! My eye will never again see good.⁽⁸⁾ The eye of him who sees me will see me no more; While your eyes are upon me, I shall no longer be.

⁽⁹⁾ As the cloud disappears and vanishes away, So he who goes down to the grave does not come up.⁽¹⁰⁾ He shall never return to his house, Nor shall his place know him anymore.⁽¹¹⁾ Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.⁽¹²⁾ Am I a sea, or a sea serpent, That You set a guard over me?

⁽¹³⁾ When I say, 'My bed will comfort me, My couch will ease my complaint,'⁽¹⁴⁾ Then You scare me with dreams And terrify me with visions,⁽¹⁵⁾ So that my soul chooses strangling And death rather than my body.⁽¹⁶⁾ I loathe my life; I would not live forever. Let me alone, For my days are but a breath.

⁽¹⁷⁾ What is man, that You should exalt him, That You should set Your heart on him,⁽¹⁸⁾ That You should visit him every morning, And test him every moment?⁽¹⁹⁾ How long? Will You not look away from me, And let me alone till I swallow my saliva?⁽²⁰⁾ Have I sinned? What have I done to You, O watcher of men? Why have You set me as Your target, So that I am a burden to myself?

⁽²¹⁾ Why then do You not pardon my transgression, And take away my iniquity? For now I will lie down in the dust, And You will seek me diligently, But I will no longer be.'

Acts Chapter 10

⁽¹⁾ There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment,⁽²⁾ a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always.⁽³⁾ About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, 'Cornelius!'⁽⁴⁾ And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, 'What is it, lord?' So he said to him, 'Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.

⁽⁵⁾ Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter.⁽⁶⁾ He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.'⁽⁷⁾ And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually.⁽⁸⁾ So when he had explained all these things to them, he sent them to Joppa.

⁽⁹⁾ The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour.⁽¹⁰⁾ Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance⁽¹¹⁾ and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth.⁽¹²⁾ In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air.

⁽¹³⁾ And a voice came to him, 'Rise, Peter; kill and eat.'⁽¹⁴⁾ But Peter said, 'Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.'⁽¹⁵⁾ And a voice spoke to him again the second time, 'What God has cleansed you must not call common.'⁽¹⁶⁾ This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again.

John Chapter 7

⁽¹⁾ After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him.⁽²⁾ Now the Jews' Feast of Tabernacles was at hand.⁽³⁾ His brothers therefore said to Him, 'Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing.⁽⁴⁾ For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.'

⁽⁵⁾ For even His brothers did not believe in Him.⁽⁶⁾ Then Jesus said to them, 'My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.⁽⁷⁾ The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil.⁽⁸⁾ You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.'

⁽⁹⁾ When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.⁽¹⁰⁾ But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.⁽¹¹⁾ Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, 'Where is He?'⁽¹²⁾ And there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, 'He is good'; others said, 'No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.'

⁽¹³⁾ However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

Lord God, heavenly King,

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory, and, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages.
