Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Venite

ⓘ 'Venite' is Latin for 'O Come,' the opening word of Psalm 95: Venite exultemus Domino ('O Come, let us sing to the LORD').

Psalm 95:1 to 7
Come, let us sing to the Lord;
   let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving
   and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,
   and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth,
   and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
   and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee,
   and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
    Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

The Lessons

Psalm 38

⁽¹⁾ To bring to remembrance. O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your wrath, Nor chasten me in Your hot displeasure!⁽²⁾ For Your arrows pierce me deeply, And Your hand presses me down.⁽³⁾ There is no soundness in my flesh Because of Your anger, Nor any health in my bones Because of my sin.⁽⁴⁾ For my iniquities have gone over my head; Like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

⁽⁵⁾ My wounds are foul and festering Because of my foolishness.⁽⁶⁾ I am troubled, I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.⁽⁷⁾ For my loins are full of inflammation, And there is no soundness in my flesh.⁽⁸⁾ I am feeble and severely broken; I groan because of the turmoil of my heart.

⁽⁹⁾ Lord, all my desire is before You; And my sighing is not hidden from You.⁽¹⁰⁾ My heart pants, my strength fails me; As for the light of my eyes, it also has gone from me.⁽¹¹⁾ My loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague, And my relatives stand afar off.⁽¹²⁾ Those also who seek my life lay snares for me; Those who seek my hurt speak of destruction, And plan deception all the day long.

Proverbs Chapter 17

⁽¹⁾ Better is a dry morsel with quietness, Than a house full of feasting with strife.⁽²⁾ A wise servant will rule over a son who causes shame, And will share an inheritance among the brothers.⁽³⁾ The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, But the LORD tests the hearts.⁽⁴⁾ An evildoer gives heed to false lips; A liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue.

⁽⁵⁾ He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker; He who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished.⁽⁶⁾ Children's children are the crown of old men, And the glory of children is their father.⁽⁷⁾ Excellent speech is not becoming to a fool, Much less lying lips to a prince.⁽⁸⁾ A present is a precious stone in the eyes of its possessor; Wherever he turns, he prospers.

⁽⁹⁾ He who covers a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates friends.⁽¹⁰⁾ Rebuke is more effective for a wise man Than a hundred blows on a fool.⁽¹¹⁾ An evil man seeks only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger will be sent against him.⁽¹²⁾ Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs, Rather than a fool in his folly.

1 Timothy Chapter 3

⁽¹⁾ This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.⁽²⁾ A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach;⁽³⁾ not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;⁽⁴⁾ one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence

⁽⁵⁾ (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?);⁽⁶⁾ not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.⁽⁷⁾ Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.⁽⁸⁾ Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money,

⁽⁹⁾ holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.⁽¹⁰⁾ But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless.⁽¹¹⁾ Likewise their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things.⁽¹²⁾ Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

⁽¹³⁾ For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.⁽¹⁴⁾ These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly;⁽¹⁵⁾ but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.⁽¹⁶⁾ And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.

Matthew Chapter 12

⁽⁴³⁾ When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none.⁽⁴⁴⁾ Then he says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order.⁽⁴⁵⁾ Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.'⁽⁴⁶⁾ While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him.

⁽⁴⁷⁾ Then one said to Him, 'Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.'⁽⁴⁸⁾ But He answered and said to the one who told Him, 'Who is My mother and who are My brothers?'⁽⁴⁹⁾ And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, 'Here are My mother and My brothers!⁽⁵⁰⁾ For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.'

Lord God, heavenly King,

we worship you, we give you thanks,

receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory, and, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages.
