Morning Prayer

Lent
I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' Luke 15:18, 19

Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Psalm 42

When shall I come and appear before God? ⁽³⁾ My tears have been my food day and night, While they continually say to me, 'Where is your God?' ⁽⁴⁾ When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with the multitude; I went with them to the house of God, With the voice of joy and praise, With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.

Genesis Chapter 46

⁽¹⁾ So Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. ⁽²⁾ Then God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, 'Jacob, Jacob!' And he said, 'Here I am.' ⁽³⁾ So He said, 'I am God, the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there. ⁽⁴⁾ I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph will put his hand on your eyes.'

1 Corinthians Chapter 9

⁽¹⁾ Am I not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? ⁽²⁾ If I am not an apostle to others, yet doubtless I am to you. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. ⁽³⁾ My defense to those who examine me is this: ⁽⁴⁾ Do we have no right to eat and drink?

⁽⁵⁾ Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? ⁽⁶⁾ Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working? ⁽⁷⁾ Who ever goes to war at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? Or who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk of the flock? ⁽⁸⁾ Do I say these things as a mere man? Or does not the law say the same also?

⁽⁹⁾ For it is written in the law of Moses, 'You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.' Is it oxen God is concerned about? ⁽¹⁰⁾ Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope. ⁽¹¹⁾ If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things? ⁽¹²⁾ If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more? Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ.

⁽¹³⁾ Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? ⁽¹⁴⁾ Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel. ⁽¹⁵⁾ But I have used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should be done so to me; for it would be better for me to die than that anyone should make my boasting void.

Mark Chapter 6

⁽³⁰⁾ Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. ⁽³¹⁾ And He said to them, 'Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.' For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. ⁽³²⁾ So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves. ⁽³³⁾ But the multitudes saw them departing, and many knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him.

⁽³⁴⁾ And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things. ⁽³⁵⁾ When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, 'This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. ⁽³⁶⁾ Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.' ⁽³⁷⁾ But He answered and said to them, 'You give them something to eat.' And they said to Him, 'Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?'

⁽³⁸⁾ But He said to them, 'How many loaves do you have? Go and see.' And when they found out they said, 'Five, and two fish.' ⁽³⁹⁾ Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. ⁽⁴⁰⁾ So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties. ⁽⁴¹⁾ And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all.

⁽⁴²⁾ So they all ate and were filled. ⁽⁴³⁾ And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. ⁽⁴⁴⁾ Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men. ⁽⁴⁵⁾ Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away.

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.

Seasonal Collect:  Third Sunday in Lent
Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
