Morning Prayer

Lent
I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' Luke 15:18, 19

Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Psalm 80

⁽¹⁾ Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who dwell between the cherubim, shine forth! ⁽²⁾ Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, Stir up Your strength, And come and save us! ⁽³⁾ Restore us, O God; Cause Your face to shine, And we shall be saved! ⁽⁴⁾ O LORD God of hosts, How long will You be angry Against the prayer of Your people?

Genesis Chapter 44

⁽¹⁸⁾ Then Judah came near to him and said: 'O my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord's hearing, and do not let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh. ⁽¹⁹⁾ My lord asked his servants, saying, 'Have you a father or a brother?' ⁽²⁰⁾ And we said to my lord, 'We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, who is young; his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother's children, and his father loves him.' ⁽²¹⁾ Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.'

⁽²²⁾ And we said to my lord, 'The lad cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.' ⁽²³⁾ But you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.' ⁽²⁴⁾ So it was, when we went up to your servant my father, that we told him the words of my lord. ⁽²⁵⁾ And our father said, 'Go back and buy us a little food.'

⁽²⁶⁾ But we said, 'We cannot go down; if our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down; for we may not see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.' ⁽²⁷⁾ Then your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons; ⁽²⁸⁾ and the one went out from me, and I said, 'Surely he is torn to pieces'; and I have not seen him since. ⁽²⁹⁾ But if you take this one also from me, and calamity befalls him, you shall bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.'

⁽³⁰⁾ Now therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since his life is bound up in the lad's life, ⁽³¹⁾ it will happen, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die. So your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave. ⁽³²⁾ For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father forever.' ⁽³³⁾ Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the lad as a slave to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brothers.

⁽³⁴⁾ For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me, lest perhaps I see the evil that would come upon my father?'

1 Corinthians Chapter 7

⁽²⁵⁾ Now concerning virgins: I have no commandment from the Lord; yet I give judgment as one whom the Lord in His mercy has made trustworthy. ⁽²⁶⁾ I suppose therefore that this is good because of the present distress -- that it is good for a man to remain as he is: ⁽²⁷⁾ Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife. ⁽²⁸⁾ But even if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Nevertheless such will have trouble in the flesh, but I would spare you.

⁽²⁹⁾ But this I say, brethren, the time is short, so that from now on even those who have wives should be as though they had none, ⁽³⁰⁾ those who weep as though they did not weep, those who rejoice as though they did not rejoice, those who buy as though they did not possess, ⁽³¹⁾ and those who use this world as not misusing it. For the form of this world is passing away.

Mark Chapter 5

⁽²¹⁾ Now when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to Him; and He was by the sea. ⁽²²⁾ And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet ⁽²³⁾ and begged Him earnestly, saying, 'My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.' ⁽²⁴⁾ So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him.

⁽²⁵⁾ Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, ⁽²⁶⁾ and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. ⁽²⁷⁾ When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. ⁽²⁸⁾ For she said, 'If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.'

⁽²⁹⁾ Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. ⁽³⁰⁾ And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, 'Who touched My clothes?' ⁽³¹⁾ But His disciples said to Him, 'You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?' ' ⁽³²⁾ And He looked around to see her who had done this thing.

⁽³³⁾ But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. ⁽³⁴⁾ And He said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.' ⁽³⁵⁾ While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue's house who said, 'Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?' ⁽³⁶⁾ As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, 'Do not be afraid; only believe.'

⁽³⁷⁾ And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. ⁽³⁸⁾ Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. ⁽³⁹⁾ When He came in, He said to them, 'Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.' ⁽⁴⁰⁾ And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying.

⁽⁴¹⁾ Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, 'Talitha, cumi,' which is translated, 'Little girl, I say to you, arise.' ⁽⁴²⁾ Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement. ⁽⁴³⁾ But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.
  On the third day he rose again.

Seasonal Collect:  Third Sunday in Lent
Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day: O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness while it was day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
