Evening Prayer

Advent
In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Isaiah 40:3

Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Lord, open our lips. And our mouth shall proclaim your praise

Psalm 55

⁽¹⁾ Give ear to my prayer, O God, And do not hide Yourself from my supplication. ⁽²⁾ Attend to me, and hear me; I am restless in my complaint, and moan noisily, ⁽³⁾ Because of the voice of the enemy, Because of the oppression of the wicked; For they bring down trouble upon me, And in wrath they hate me. ⁽⁴⁾ My heart is severely pained within me, And the terrors of death have fallen upon me.

⁽⁵⁾ Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me, And horror has overwhelmed me. ⁽⁶⁾ So I said, 'Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. ⁽⁷⁾ Indeed, I would wander far off, And remain in the wilderness. Selah ⁽⁸⁾ I would hasten my escape From the windy storm and tempest.'

Isaiah Chapter 10

⁽²⁰⁾ And it shall come to pass in that day That the remnant of Israel, And such as have escaped of the house of Jacob, Will never again depend on him who defeated them, But will depend on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. ⁽²¹⁾ The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, To the Mighty God. ⁽²²⁾ For though your people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea, A remnant of them will return; The destruction decreed shall overflow with righteousness. ⁽²³⁾ For the Lord GOD of hosts Will make a determined end In the midst of all the land.

⁽²⁴⁾ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD of hosts: 'O My people, who dwell in Zion, do not be afraid of the Assyrian. He shall strike you with a rod and lift up his staff against you, in the manner of Egypt. ⁽²⁵⁾ For yet a very little while and the indignation will cease, as will My anger in their destruction.' ⁽²⁶⁾ And the LORD of hosts will stir up a scourge for him like the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb; as His rod was on the sea, so will He lift it up in the manner of Egypt. ⁽²⁷⁾ It shall come to pass in that day That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, And his yoke from your neck, And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.

Jude Chapter 1

⁽¹⁷⁾ But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: ⁽¹⁸⁾ how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. ⁽¹⁹⁾ These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit. ⁽²⁰⁾ But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

⁽²¹⁾ keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. ⁽²²⁾ And on some have compassion, making a distinction; ⁽²³⁾ but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh. ⁽²⁴⁾ Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,

Luke Chapter 3

⁽¹⁾ Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, ⁽²⁾ while Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. ⁽³⁾ And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, ⁽⁴⁾ as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.

⁽⁵⁾ Every valley shall be filled And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough ways smooth; ⁽⁶⁾ And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.' ' ⁽⁷⁾ Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, 'Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁽⁸⁾ Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

⁽⁹⁾ And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.'

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.
  On the third day he rose again.
