Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Venite

Psalm 95:1 to 7
Come, let us sing to the Lord;
   let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving
   and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,
   and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth,
   and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
   and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee,
   and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.

The Lessons

Psalm 119

⁽¹⁾ Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the LORD!⁽²⁾ Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart!⁽³⁾ They also do no iniquity; They walk in His ways.⁽⁴⁾ You have commanded us To keep Your precepts diligently.

⁽⁵⁾ Oh, that my ways were directed To keep Your statutes!⁽⁶⁾ Then I would not be ashamed, When I look into all Your commandments.⁽⁷⁾ I will praise You with uprightness of heart, When I learn Your righteous judgments.⁽⁸⁾ I will keep Your statutes; Oh, do not forsake me utterly!

⁽⁹⁾ How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.⁽¹⁰⁾ With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!⁽¹¹⁾ Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!⁽¹²⁾ Blessed are You, O LORD! Teach me Your statutes!

Jonah Chapter 1

⁽¹⁷⁾ Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.⁽¹⁾ Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish's belly.⁽²⁾ And he said: 'I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. 'Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice.⁽³⁾ For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.⁽⁴⁾ Then I said, 'I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.'

⁽⁵⁾ The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head.⁽⁶⁾ I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God.⁽⁷⁾ When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple.⁽⁸⁾ Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy.

⁽⁹⁾ But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.'⁽¹⁰⁾ So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Acts Chapter 27

⁽⁹⁾ Now when much time had been spent, and sailing was now dangerous because the Fast was already over, Paul advised them,⁽¹⁰⁾ saying, 'Men, I perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives.'⁽¹¹⁾ Nevertheless the centurion was more persuaded by the helmsman and the owner of the ship than by the things spoken by Paul.⁽¹²⁾ And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised to set sail from there also, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete opening toward the southwest and northwest, and winter there.

⁽¹³⁾ When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their desire, putting out to sea, they sailed close by Crete.⁽¹⁴⁾ But not long after, a tempestuous head wind arose, called Euroclydon.⁽¹⁵⁾ So when the ship was caught, and could not head into the wind, we let her drive.⁽¹⁶⁾ And running under the shelter of an island called Clauda, we secured the skiff with difficulty.

⁽¹⁷⁾ When they had taken it on board, they used cables to undergird the ship; and fearing lest they should run aground on the Syrtis Sands, they struck sail and so were driven.⁽¹⁸⁾ And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed, the next day they lightened the ship.⁽¹⁹⁾ On the third day we threw the ship's tackle overboard with our own hands.⁽²⁰⁾ Now when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest beat on us, all hope that we would be saved was finally given up.

⁽²¹⁾ But after long abstinence from food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, 'Men, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss.⁽²²⁾ And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.⁽²³⁾ For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,⁽²⁴⁾ saying, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.'

⁽²⁵⁾ Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me.⁽²⁶⁾ However, we must run aground on a certain island.'

Luke Chapter 9

⁽¹⁾ Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.⁽²⁾ He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.⁽³⁾ And He said to them, 'Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece.⁽⁴⁾ Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.

⁽⁵⁾ And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.'⁽⁶⁾ So they departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.⁽⁷⁾ Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by Him; and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,⁽⁸⁾ and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again.

⁽⁹⁾ Herod said, 'John I have beheaded, but who is this of whom I hear such things?' So he sought to see Him.⁽¹⁰⁾ And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.⁽¹¹⁾ But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing.⁽¹²⁾ When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, 'Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted place here.'

⁽¹³⁾ But He said to them, 'You give them something to eat.' And they said, 'We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people.'⁽¹⁴⁾ For there were about five thousand men. Then He said to His disciples, 'Make them sit down in groups of fifty.'⁽¹⁵⁾ And they did so, and made them all sit down.⁽¹⁶⁾ Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude.

⁽¹⁷⁾ So they all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.

Lord God, heavenly King,

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory, and, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages.
