Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Venite

Psalm 95:1 to 7
Come, let us sing to the Lord;
   let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving
   and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,
   and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth,
   and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
   and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee,
   and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.

The Lessons

Psalm 118

⁽¹⁾ Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.⁽²⁾ Let Israel now say, 'His mercy endures forever.'⁽³⁾ Let the house of Aaron now say, 'His mercy endures forever.'⁽⁴⁾ Let those who fear the LORD now say, 'His mercy endures forever.'

⁽⁵⁾ I called on the LORD in distress; The LORD answered me and set me in a broad place.⁽⁶⁾ The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?⁽⁷⁾ The LORD is for me among those who help me; Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me.⁽⁸⁾ It is better to trust in the LORD Than to put confidence in man.

Hosea Chapter 13

⁽⁴⁾ Yet I am the LORD your God Ever since the land of Egypt, And you shall know no God but Me; For there is no Savior besides Me.⁽⁵⁾ I knew you in the wilderness, In the land of great drought.⁽⁶⁾ When they had pasture, they were filled; They were filled and their heart was exalted; Therefore they forgot Me.⁽⁷⁾ So I will be to them like a lion; Like a leopard by the road I will lurk;

⁽⁸⁾ I will meet them like a bear deprived of her cubs; I will tear open their rib cage, And there I will devour them like a lion. The wild beast shall tear them.⁽⁹⁾ O Israel, you are destroyed, But your help is from Me.⁽¹⁰⁾ I will be your King; Where is any other, That he may save you in all your cities? And your judges to whom you said, 'Give me a king and princes'?⁽¹¹⁾ I gave you a king in My anger, And took him away in My wrath.

⁽¹²⁾ The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; His sin is stored up.⁽¹³⁾ The sorrows of a woman in childbirth shall come upon him. He is an unwise son, For he should not stay long where children are born.⁽¹⁴⁾ I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. O Death, I will be your plagues! O Grave, I will be your destruction! Pity is hidden from My eyes.

1 Corinthians Chapter 2

⁽⁶⁾ However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.⁽⁷⁾ But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory,⁽⁸⁾ which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.⁽⁹⁾ But as it is written: 'Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.'

⁽¹⁰⁾ But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.⁽¹¹⁾ For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.⁽¹²⁾ Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.⁽¹³⁾ These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

⁽¹⁴⁾ But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.⁽¹⁵⁾ But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.⁽¹⁶⁾ For 'who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?' But we have the mind of Christ.

Matthew Chapter 14

⁽¹⁾ At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus⁽²⁾ and said to his servants, 'This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.'⁽³⁾ For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.⁽⁴⁾ Because John had said to him, 'It is not lawful for you to have her.'

⁽⁵⁾ And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.⁽⁶⁾ But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.⁽⁷⁾ Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.⁽⁸⁾ So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter.'

⁽⁹⁾ And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her.⁽¹⁰⁾ So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.⁽¹¹⁾ And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.⁽¹²⁾ Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

The Song of Zechariah Luke 1: 68 to 79
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham,
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
To give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,

You are God
You are God: we praise you;
You are the Lord; we acclaim you;

All creation worships you.

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory, and, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages.
