Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

Psalm 16

⁽¹⁾ Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust. ⁽²⁾ O my soul, you have said to the LORD, 'You are my Lord, My goodness is nothing apart from You.' ⁽³⁾ As for the saints who are on the earth, 'They are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.' ⁽⁴⁾ Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god; Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer, Nor take up their names on my lips.

Psalm 17

1 Samuel Chapter 17

⁽¹⁷⁾ Then Jesse said to his son David, 'Take now for your brothers an ephah of this dried grain and these ten loaves, and run to your brothers at the camp. ⁽¹⁸⁾ And carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your brothers fare, and bring back news of them.' ⁽¹⁹⁾ Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. ⁽²⁰⁾ So David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, and took the things and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the camp as the army was going out to the fight and shouting for the battle.

⁽²¹⁾ For Israel and the Philistines had drawn up in battle array, army against army. ⁽²²⁾ And David left his supplies in the hand of the supply keeper, ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers. ⁽²³⁾ Then as he talked with them, there was the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies of the Philistines; and he spoke according to the same words. So David heard them. ⁽²⁴⁾ And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid.

⁽²⁵⁾ So the men of Israel said, 'Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and it shall be that the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father's house exemption from taxes in Israel.' ⁽²⁶⁾ Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, 'What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?' ⁽²⁷⁾ And the people answered him in this manner, saying, 'So shall it be done for the man who kills him.' ⁽²⁸⁾ Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab's anger was aroused against David, and he said, 'Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.'

⁽²⁹⁾ And David said, 'What have I done now? Is there not a cause?' ⁽³⁰⁾ Then he turned from him toward another and said the same thing; and these people answered him as the first ones did.

Acts Chapter 10

⁽³⁴⁾ Then Peter opened his mouth and said: 'In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. ⁽³⁵⁾ But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. ⁽³⁶⁾ The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ, He is Lord of all. ⁽³⁷⁾ that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached:

⁽³⁸⁾ how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. ⁽³⁹⁾ And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. ⁽⁴⁰⁾ Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, ⁽⁴¹⁾ not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead.

⁽⁴²⁾ And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. ⁽⁴³⁾ To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.' ⁽⁴⁴⁾ While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. ⁽⁴⁵⁾ And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.

⁽⁴⁶⁾ For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, ⁽⁴⁷⁾ Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?' ⁽⁴⁸⁾ And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.

Mark Chapter 1

⁽¹⁾ The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. ⁽²⁾ As it is written in the Prophets: 'Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.' ⁽³⁾ The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.' ' ⁽⁴⁾ John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

⁽⁵⁾ Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. ⁽⁶⁾ Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. ⁽⁷⁾ And he preached, saying, 'There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. ⁽⁸⁾ I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.'

⁽⁹⁾ It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. ⁽¹⁰⁾ And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. ⁽¹¹⁾ Then a voice came from heaven, 'You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.' ⁽¹²⁾ Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.

⁽¹³⁾ And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.

The Second Song of Isaiah      Isaiah 55:6 to 11

Seek the Lord while he wills to be found;
call upon him when he draws near.
Let the wicked forsake their ways
and the evil ones their thoughts;

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.
  On the third day he rose again.
  He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,

Collect of the Day: Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. A Prayer for Mission: O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
